Over the course of my 6-week sabbatical, I kept a journal of my travels and experiences. I’m sharing some of those to give you a flavor of how God spoke over the course of my time away. Sometimes I’ll share an entire day’s entry. At other times, just a partial/edited post. After the journal entry, I’ll share some of my post-sabbatical reflections on that entry. Each day I started with a quote, followed by my reflections on that day.

If you “follow” the blog (upper right on the home page), you’ll get automatic email updates when I post the next entry. You can find previous posts in the links to the right. At the bottom of each post, you’ll notice some “share” buttons. Feel free to share this with others if you think it would be interesting to them or help them.

Among times there is a time that turns a corner and everything this side of it is new. Times do not go backward.
Perelandra
, C.S. Lewis

Last fall, the day after the “great troubles” began, Brenda [Plum] gave me C.S Lewis’ space trilogy. I quickly read the first one but bogged down in the second. In fact, I put it away. I committed to finishing it this summer and have carried Perelandra all around the U.S. Today I started it again. And God’s timing amazed me in two ways:

The real leader has no need to lead.
He is content to point the way.
~Henry Miller

I’m sitting on the balcony again listening to the waves crash on the beach beneath me. It’s a picture-perfect night. The beach is alive with children hunting crabs with their flashlights. The sky is alive with the brilliance of a million stars. I wish Audra and the girls were with me.

Note: I’ve skipped ahead a bit. After my time at home, I returned to Hattiesburg to attend a funeral visitation for a friend’s mother and then returned to the beach. This time without the family.

A time may come soon when none will return.
Then there will be need of valour without renown.

June 11 – Day 20
Dad’s House – Ackerman
10:30 p.m.

One road leads home and a thousand roads lead into the wilderness.
~ C.S. Lewis

It felt good today to cross over from Winston County into Choctaw County. It’s been too long since I’ve been home. Though I haven’t lived here for 25 years whenever I come to Ackerman I still feel like that homesick college kid returning from Ole Miss for the weekend. As I drove around today I hardly recognized the town, though in reality it hasn’t changed much. Pap’s Place still anchors downtown (only in Mississippi would a catfish place “anchor” main street). There were new storage units; Busby’s is now a pawn shop; a new hospital is being built; Lawrence’s gas station is closed; the high school and the park look the same as they always have.

Sometimes God won’t reveal the second step until you take the first step.
Be obedient to the revelation God has given.
~ Mark Batterson

Almost two weeks in. It’s been a busy–no, adventurous–two weeks. And a meaningful two weeks. Around every corner God seems to be lurking. Earlier today, I wrestled with the restlessness in my soul. It seems that something is lodged deep within and I can’t find it to get it out. Like when the copier says there’s a piece of paper jammed in the mechanism, but you look and look and can’t find it.

We won’t look back over our lives; we’ll look back over our love.
All the rest will end up on the editing room floor.
~ Bob Goff

What a busy day at home. Cutting grass, tending to projects, washing the Pilot, trimming the hedges. It was good to be back in the rhythm of home. Even here, though, on a day of work and labor (I’m very tired; all my muscles are aching) there was plenty to chew on.
